Research and analysis on TV drama posters.

The image above is a poster from the TV series The Vampire Diaries, The series is TV drama, i am going to use this poster and other alike to influence my own poster.

The image is dark and mysterious; i believe that this reflects the atmosphere of the series itself. All the characters visible in the image are wearing black or other dark colours. The poster features all of the main characters in the programme; this means that fans of specific characters or actors are attracted to the series increasing the audience numbers.

The Image is set in a dark wooded area, this to some implies fear and tension. I believe that this again implements the theme of the series, following the fearful journey of supernatural creatures. As mentioned before the darkness of the image reinforces the fear, tension and mystery that you can expect to experience.

The reflection in the water beneath the characters add an eerie atmosphere to the image, i would like to include all of the above atmospheric settings to the poster i am going to create.

This image is a poster of the TV drama The Walking Dead, the image consists mostly of setting, the setting is quite plain but is adds an eerie atmosphere. There is one character featured in the centre of the image, this is the main character. He looks fearful, this may reflect onto the audience making them fearful of the event that is yet to come in the series.

Finally this image is from the TV drama Misfits, although the characters seem to have a positive attitude and don’t seem to feel fearful, the unknown character in the back dressed in all black makes the audience feel fearful. The grey clouds featured in the background adds darkness and tension to the image, this may again imply fear.

How my research informed my pre-production.

How my research informed my pre-production.

I created my press release by looking at previously written press releases from TV programmes such as The vampire Diaries and Broadchurch, they are both TV drama as mine is, i chose to use these two to help write my own as they both relate to the TV show i have created. Also they are aired on different channels; this allowed me to see how different TV channels set out their press releases. I took some aspects from the two press releases and interpreted them into my own press release. When researching press releases it became apparent to me that they are directly speaking to the audience and are quite Informal. I have used direct language within my press release and have attempted to write informally.

I also watched the trailers of the TV series The Vampire diaries and Broadchurch; this allowed me to see the different types of Camera shots that are used in the trailer of a TV drama and also the use of sound. After watching and analysing the trailers i found that the dark and mysterious mood and atmosphere that the trailers created was set through camera angles such as close up shots, low angle shots and Point of View shots. It was also set through slow, dark and eerie music. It would add tension, mystery and in some cases fear to the scene, this is what i wished to achieve.

I noticed that in the trailers there was not much information given on the characters, i found this would be intriguing, because of this i have attempted to add a mysterious background to my characters and give as little away about my characters within my trailer as possible. This is the same with the story line, little was spoilt in the trailers i tried to replicate this by showing images that don’t portray too much of the story line.

I noticed that the editing of the supernatural creatures in The Vampire Diaries trailer was very realistic; i have again tried to duplicate their realism in an unrealistic scene/image. Finally i noticed that the show was targetted at one specific audience and it kept to this throughout the entire trailer i have attempted to do this also, by using similar shot types and also trying to keep the atmosphere of the scenes similar.
